Crysis Gone Gold

Title says it all folks.. the much-hyped Crysis is headed to mass production and should hit shelves in about 2 weeks.

The year’s biggest PC game has just gotten that much closer to hitting store shelves. Crysis, Crytek’s next-generation first person shooter for the PC has gone gold and will be on store shelves everywhere November 16, 2007.

“We are extremely proud of what we have been able to accomplish with Crysis,” said Cevat Yerli, CEO of Crytek. “We wanted to push the boundaries both visually and with open-ended, non-linear gameplay and we believe the end result delivers that vision.”

EA Mythic Layoffs

I knew it. I knew it all so long ago. I called it, didn't I? Didn't I?! DIDN'T I?! Yes, I did.

Destructoid link

EA has announced they need to cut costs, so a bunch of the poor SOBs over at Mythic (and some working on UO... I didn't even know they still had people working on UO) are bearing the brunt of it in the form of layoffs.

The email from Mythic VP Rob Denton was sent to all employees of Mythic and details some of the plans to reduce costs by cutting jobs as well as some actions already taken. Headcount will be managed through "attrition, performance management, stricter hiring guidelines and layoffs". Over the next two months, the Ultima Online team will be moving from EA Redwood Shores to Mythic's Fairfax, VA studio to streamline operations. Meanwhile, a number of employees at both studios have already been let go as of earlier today including many UO staffers, with more to follow as EA tightens its belt in the coming months.
Circling the drain, folks... circling the drain. EA destroys another (couple) of good games, and another good game company. Sometimes I wish they'd do the gaming world a favor and shoot themselves into space.

Nintendo and Sony Both Double

Well, kinda. Nintendo's Half-Year profits have doubled on the Wii, while Sony's game division operating losses doubled in Q2.

I wish I could say Sony was learning something from this, but it is clear they have not.

Interesting Little Tidbit...

I've reformatted/installed 3 machines in the last few weeks, and not a single one of them ever tried to download WGA as an update. I pay close attention because I keep that crap well clear of any system I run. So this then leads to the question, has Microsoft quietly stopped trying to install product-breaking spyware on your machine, is it an oversight, or have they simply renamed it "Critical Security Update KB#######?"

I Was A Hacker for the MPAA

Article from Wired: http://www.wired.com/politics/onlinerights/news/2007/10/p2p_hacker#

Promises of Hollywood fame and fortune persuaded a young hacker to betray former associates in the BitTorrent scene to Tinseltown's anti-piracy lobby, according to the hacker.

In an exclusive interview with Wired News, gun-for-hire hacker Robert Anderson tells for the first time how the Motion Picture Association of America promised him money and power if he provided confidential information on TorrentSpy, a popular BitTorrent search site.

According to Anderson, the MPAA told him: "We would need somebody like you. We would give you a nice paying job, a house, a car, anything you needed.... if you save Hollywood for us you can become rich and powerful."

Review: Portal

Look, it's been a busy day, ok? I'm gonna keep this one short.

Portal is a lot of fun. It does really amazing things with the engine. But it's freakin short. The game is pretty much 2 hours long, but then you can play them again in a harder fashion or with commentary. But still... 2 hours long. But it's really fun. And it comes as part of the orange box with 5 other games so really you've only paid like 10 bucks for it. So, this review is short too.

Pro: Innovative play, fun, good puzzles, great humor
Con: Short as all hell.
Rating: B

Ea Buys Bioware, Pandemic

"They drove a dump truck full of cash up to my house! I'm not made of stone!!"
-Krusty the Clown

The company that ruined so many franchises has now bought Bioware and Pandemic. Nice to have known you guys. Say hi to the emaciated remains of DAOC, Battlefield, UO, SWG, and a number of others as you're all fed to the fat dork whose job it is to update Madden every year simply by backspacing over the number at the end and incrementing by one.

Warhammer Online Beta Rescinded

Yeah, you heard me. Something's very rotten in denmark when you have to SHUT DOWN your game's beta to go back and fix something for two months. Methinks there's trouble at Mythic.

The guy who wrote that piece for Ten Ton Hammer is clearly a little too conciliatory about the news. This does not bode well at all.

New WoW Patch Mucks Up Sound Blasters

I never quite got the EAX to work right when I was playing WoW (yeah, I guess I've officially stopped now), but I always attributed it to being Creative Labs' fault. But now I am led to wonder, after Blizzard had to go and break Sound Blasters with a new software in-game mixer system.

From the Creative Labs Forums:

As many Creative soundcard owners are discovering, Blizzard recently made changes to the WoW client that have impacted the audio experience significantly. Our developer relations group were given minimal advance warning that these changes were about to occur, and our subsequent requests to Blizzard for clarification as to why the changes were made have gone unanswered.
The new audio implementation in WoW uses a 3rd party audio middleware system which offers a generic software mixer with some reverb effects. Creative has worked with the middleware company in question and already implemented a hardware audio path that enables 3D audio mixing and DSP based effects processing on Audigy and X-Fi cards. "Bioshock" uses this system to great effect, and it is relatively straight forward for developers to support. We have offered to help Blizzard enable this hardware audio path but they haven't taken us up on it.
Many Creative soundcard owners are pointing out that their audio experience is nowhere near as compelling as it used to be, which is a great shame. We will continue to seek a better resolution to the current situation with Blizzard. In the interim, we would encourage Creative soundcard owners to let Blizzard know that they would very much like to have their audio experience restored to its former glory.
