Warhammer Online Newsletter #22

Of all the innumerable conflicts that have defined the history of the Warhammer world, there may be none as lengthy or as bitterly fought as the ongoing war between the noble High Elves and their evil kin, the malicious Dark Elves.

This ancient struggle is very much at the heart of the Age of Reckoning. Malekith, Witch King of the Dark Elves, is obsessed with reclaiming the Phoenix Throne, a birthright denied him by the High Elves millennia ago. When he learns that a new Champion of the Dark Gods is marching to war with the Empire, the diabolical ruler of the Dark Elves hatches a sweeping plan to conquer the isle of Ulthuan and install himself as the true King of all Elfkind.

The arrival of House Uthorin's massive Black Ark at the northern coast of the Blighted Isle represents the first strike in the Dark Elves' invasion of Ulthuan. Just as the legions of Druchii warriors spill out onto the craggy, mist-shrouded bluffs of black rock, they are ambushed by the warriors of the Shining Guard. The Blighted Isle is a place of particular importance to the Dark Elves, for it is home to the dread Shrine of Khaine, the Lord of Murder that the Druchii revere.

To the south of the Blighted Isle lies Chrace, where the land rises steeply to meet the pine-covered slopes of the Annulii Mountains. Here, the legendary White Lions of Chrace make their home. They are among the fiercest and most courageous warriors in all of Ulthuan, and will show no mercy to any Dark Elf invaders they meet on the field on battle.

Like the Blighted Isle, the Shadowlands are a bleak, rocky region blanketed in perpetual gloom. Over the millennia, many epic battles have been fought in this place, and the land itself seems cursed for it. Once, in an age long past, a great Elven kingdom called Nagarythe flourished in the north of Ulthuan. Malekith inherited this realm, and during the Sundering it was utterly destroyed. The Shadowlands are all that remain, its shores patrolled by the grim and silent Shadow Warriors who watch for threats from the Dark Elves.

Across the vast ocean, in titanic floating fortresses of black stone, the sinister Dark Elves have come, driven by an ancient hatred. Upon the bleak shores of the Blighted Isle, legions of Druchii warriors spill forth from the dark holds of the Black Arks, their eyes filled with bloodlust and their jagged blades sharpened to a keen edge. Behind them, nightmarish beasts of war lumber forth or flap into the night skies on great leathery wings.

The intricate and insidious plans of Malekith the Witch King have nearly come to fruition. At last, after millennia of waiting, the Druchii will claim their appointed place as the rightful heirs to the legacy of Aenarion and the true masters of all the Elven races.

"Witch Elves go around with their scantily clad armor and their enormous hair and their nasty daggers, and they sneak up on people. They use potions, they use lotions, they use powders, and they use poisons. They imbibe crazy fumes and noxious joy, and that sends them into a furious craziness that allows them to dance around and slaughter people. They’re brides of Khaine, they are covered in blood, and they’ve got big hair. They look really sexy and they are incredibly dangerous. They would be on the front cover of every 1980’s rock album there ever was!”

“The Black Guard is the embodiment of brutish, shear bloody-minded violence. They are encased in phenomenal amounts of armor and wield the biggest, evilest, bad*** weapons they can find. Their job is to find the enemy and kill ‘em. They are basically very, very dangerous, really hard to kill, and when they get close to you they deal out tons of damage. The more they hate you, the more damage and misery they will pile upon you. And you know what? They hate everybody, all the time, forever!”

Swift and strong, determined and deadly, the High Elves of Ulthuan will show no mercy to the treacherous invaders who would despoil their sacred island home. The High Elves are in every way the opposite of their spiteful brethren, prizing courage, discipline, honor and above all, tradition. Clad in shining Ithilmar armor, the High Elf warrior is a master of sword, spear and bow, spending decades to perfect his martial skills.

For time beyond reckoning, the guardians of Ulthuan have defended their homeland from enemies of every kind. In this task, they have never failed. But this is the Age of Reckoning, where nothing is certain.

“Swordmasters are, well, masters of swords. They are so over-the-top in the way they have learned to use their swords that they basically do dances – sword dances – that allows them to build up energy and build up super brilliant attacks. They are all about doing an awful lot of damage very, very quickly and using show-offy little bits of magic to show how super cool they really are.”

Thus the Archmage is not just good at magic; they are super good at magic. This is a Healer / Caster. To be good at his job, the Archmage must taste combat, draw in Chaos energy, control it, then fire it back at the enemy or mold it into positive magic to unleash on his allies.”

Several months ago, we teased you with the mention of a new lighting system being implemented in WAR. The team now has that system up and running, and the Tier One zones in the game are fully lit. This month, we bring you some stunning in-game screens of the lighting model in action. Take a look at the dramatic difference lighting can make in these “before and after” images.

EA Mythic and BL Publishing are pleased to announce that work is under way on a new novel, EMPIRE IN CHAOS, based on Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning.

In a land ravaged by plague and swarming with mutants, a young woman and her companions become swept up in an epic battle to save the Empire from its most ferocious foes - the forces of Chaos.

When Annaliese Jaeger's village is overrun and destroyed by mutants, she and an injured elf captive are the only survivors. As the two unlikely companions fight their way towards Black Fire Pass, Annaliese discovers within herself powers of courage and faith that inspire all around her. With a grizzled Witch Hunter and a Dwarf Ironbreaker, the heroes battle alongside the armies of the Empire and the Dwarfs, above and below the earth, against greenskin tribes and the hordes of Chaos. Together, they must find their courage and help turn back the tides of darkness, lest all of the Empire be lost.

In the eternal fight against Chaos, we must all become heroes

Penned by noted Games Workshop writer, Anthony Reynolds, EMPIRE IN CHAOS will be available in all major bookstores and on the Black Library website in early 2008. Stay tuned for more information and exclusive preview selections from the novel!

The Chaos Wastes, also known as the Umbra Chaotica, lie far to the north of the Empire of Men, near the top of the world. Found beyond even the farthest reaches of Norsca and the Sea of Swords, the Chaos Wastes are comprised of terrain both frigid and desolate, wherein few natural things grow and only the most desperate or highly mutated creatures can hope to survive for long.

The Chaos Wastes exist as a buffer between this world and the Realm of Chaos. While the outskirts of the Chaos Wastes are analogous to the tundra-like conditions of Norsca or Troll Country, the landscape changes dramatically further to the north. Inland from the shores of the Sea of Chaos, the land is rife with the corrupting influence of the Ruinous Powers. It is here in the birthplace of magic that the breath of the gods blows more strongly than anywhere else in the world. From here, the blasphemous promises of power and glory are carried on the winds to all who can hear them.

Read More About the Chaos Wastes >>

Located deep within the icy Chaos Wastes of the north, the Inevitable City is a beacon and gathering point for the mortal forces of Chaos. Worshipers and servants of Tzeentch, also known as the Raven God, are drawn to this brooding ancient city, a city older and fouler than any other in the known world. The Inevitable City is located on the brink of an enormous crater; one that has never been measured by any living creature. Entrance into this menacing metropolis can only be obtained via a cavernous pass carved through the crater rim.

The visual look of the Inevitable City is a reflection of its inhabitants, drawing elements from their armor design as well as general qualities from their cold, destructive demeanors. Early inspiration for the core look came from the Chaos Warriors themselves who wear heavy plate armor adorned with spikes and horns, and decorated with skulls and symbols of Chaos. The Inevitable City, likewise, has an architectural strength and weight that feels suitably oppressive, accented with sculptural details portraying various representations of the Raven God and the watchful eye of Tzeentch. In real world terms, the city draws from a mixture of Gothic and Aztec design. With its heavy stonework, claw-like metal crenellations, visages of the Raven God, and arcane carvings and rune-work, the Inevitable City feels as evil and dangerous as its corrupted occupants.

If I was going to recommend seven ways to prepare for WAR… it would be the following:

1. Get onto beta. (yeah, I know,
easier said than done)
2. Watch the movie Jabberwocky. It’s
very Warhammer.
3. Play Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay
2nd Edition (shameless plug over)
4. Listen to the Conan the Barbarian
soundtrack. (works well with 3)
5. Read the ‘Trollslayer’ series of
novels
6. Paint up an Empire Spearman.
Then smash him to bits while
shouting ‘Noob! Destruction Rulez!’.
Or an Orc if that’s your preference.
7. Eat pies. Drink Beer.

I was surprised, WoW was not number 1. Even Everquest wasn't, though I'm not sure EQ should be above WoW. But, when I saw the number 1 spot, I had to nod my head. Yeah, that one got everybody I knew, back in the 90s, even my parents and grandparents, nongamers to the last of them.

My First Computer Game Ever

This was the first computer game I ever owned. My Grandpa Bill gave it to me on a 5 1/4" floppy in 1983 or so. It was he who set me down the gamer path to this day. Thanks, Grandpa Bill.

Mobygames says about the game -

A set of 8 (TEN! -G.B.) games that are designed to be played on the original IBM PC computer of the time. Most games are replicas of other popular games from the early 80s, such as a Moon Lander and a Pac-Man clone. Everything uses ASCII graphics, so it even works on the MDA adapter. Of course, an easy-to-access Boss Key is included and it pops up a nice histogram with Friendlysoft-related data.

Conan MMO - Buff From Sex

Brings new meaning to that pretty red-headed cleric saying "hang on, I need to buff the party."

From mmorpg.com-

Fresh off the presses at the Games Convention in Leipzig, MMORPG.com has learned from a reliable source at Funcom that characters will be able to have sex and will receive a buff for the action. That is not to say, however, that there will be explicit sex in the game.

Anyone who has followed Robert E. Howard's creation knows that sex has been a prevalent theme in the Conan IP, which Funcom is doing their best to honor.

Age of Conan, as has previously been announced, will carry an "M" rating.

More Warhammer Online Q&As

At PAX, Warcry got a few questions in - these questions in specific -

WarCry: Last we heard, you had the Greenskins and Dwarves playable in the beta, and that was it. Has that expanded yet?
WarCry: We hear a lot about these great public quests. Is there only one per zone, or many in each area?
WarCry: Public quests are designed for a lot of players working together. Are the encounters dynamic or scalable? What happens in a few months when there aren't very many players in the newbie area? Can a player then still do a public quest?
WarCry: What kind of rewards are there for public quests? What's the point of doing them over normal quests?
WarCry: Can you explain a bit about how exactly the Morale system works? How do you gain it and use it?
WarCry: So we have seen the Orcapult working in game now, are any other siege weapons in the game yet?
And MMO-Gamer talks to WO's Online Combat and Career Lead Adam Gershowitz, to tell us about what he does and why you should jump ship to Warhammer Online.

Wing Commander Soundtrack For Sale

Ha ha ha... wonder if the X-Wing soundtrack is soon to follow?

I remember "Fat Man," he was the name of names for video game music back in the 90s. He did all the music to "The Seventh Guest" if you remember that little bit of creepy Myst-in-a-haunted-house goodness that was one of the first games (other than myst, obviously) to make use of the unprecedented space afforded by the burgeoning CD-ROM media.

Valve's Gabe Newell - MS Screwed Up With Vista-Only DX10

From the "well, duh" department, via heise online-

According to an online survey by Valve Software, only one in fifty players who access download service Steam has a DirectX 10-compatible graphics card and Windows Vista installed. In an interview with heise online, Gabe Newell, president of Valve Software, said that Microsoft made a terrible mistake releasing DirectX 10 for Vista only and excluding Windows XP. He said this decision affected the whole industry as so far only a very small percentage of players can use DirectX 10.

When developing cross-platform games which are also released fo Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, developers look for the smallest common denominator. And since neither Microsoft's nor Sony's new consoles support Shader Model 4.0 for DirectX 10, only few games use it, he said.

In addition, Newell bemoaned the increasing lack of input device diversity in PC gaming culture. He would like to see controllers like the Wiimote or the Guitar Hero guitar, but since DirectX support for devices like these had increasingly been reduced over the last few years, developers didn't dare implement these expensive innovations.

Further Proof That It Is Always Best To Pirate.

Between the DRM fiasco of Bioshock and various other crap that has been going on for years, I've often railed against how current software copy protection schemes do nothing but inconvenience or punish bona fide users while simultaneously encouraging the very piracy it is meant to prevent, but this takes the cake.

Apparently, Microsoft is having a wee bit of trouble with their WGA "tattle" servers, so until they fix it, every single person using non-cracked versions of XP and Vista risks product deactivation with every moment they are online, living in fear that their operating system will revolt when it can't successfully "phone home."

From Ars Technica:

Late last night we started receiving reports from readers experiencing problems with Windows Genuine Advantage authentication. Users of both Windows XP and Windows Vista were writing to say that they could not validate their installations using WGA, and one user even said that his installation was invalidated by the service.
Related Stories

We contacted our sources at Microsoft, who told us off the record that the company is aware of a major WGA server outage affecting users across the globe. The Windows Genuine Advantage support forum has exploded with complaints, as a result, and Phil Liu, WGA project manager, says that he won't sleep until the problem is fixed. Windows Vista and XP are affected, 32- and 64-bit versions.

...

How does this affect you?

If you use Windows, do your best to avoid anything that requires a ping to WGA. That means you should stay away from patches and add-ons until the coast is clear. WGA will not reach out across the Internet and deactivate your copy of Windows, but you should avoid talking to a WGA server for any reason.

For those of you doing installations and upgrades this weekend, we recommend that you avoid activation at this time. Remember that you can run Windows legally for 30 days without activating.

If you attempt a validation and it fails, your install may be marked as non-genuine, which could lead to several annoyances. First things first, do not reboot a Windows machine that has been marked as non-genuine. Once you do so, you will lose functionality and the Aero interface. It would be best to wait until this problem has been resolved.

Read more in the source article.

So there you have it. Sucks to be you, the next few days, if you don't happen to be using a cracked copy of XP Pro Corporate SP2 with WGA disabled.

...(shifty glance).

Worst. Launch. Evar.

So almost a week into the launch of BioShock, and all is not Rapture in the underwater city (heh heh, you see what I did there? Gawd I'm clever).

Turns out the DRM/Copy protection on Bioshock makes HL2 look like that copy of sopwith you gave to all your friends back in middle school on 5 1/4" floppies. First of all, the thing *infects* you with SecuRom, probably the most odious corporate rootkit ever. Then it insists on checking in over the internet with every installation. If you're not on the internet, you're just hosed, fyi. No Bioshock for you... even though the game is exclusively single player. Then to add insult to injury the damned thing tries to keep track of how many times you install it, and if it exceeds TWO installs, you're out of luck and can't install any more. Oh sure, they claim all you have to do to get an "install token" (what a putrid word, having to invent an imaginary coin to represent how many times you're allowed to install software you bought) back is to go through the uninstall... but show of hands out there... who's ever actually gone through an "uninstall" process all that often? Anyone? No? Of course not. You just head on into c:\program files and delete the sucker out. But that's a one-way ticket to Bonedville with Bioshock.

But wait, there's more!

Most people like widescreen monitors because they show you more of what's to the sides, right? Because every single game in existence that supports widescreen does that... takes the standard 4:3 ratio and adds more to the sides, yes? Not so with bioshock. To adapt the 4:3 ratio to widescreen, 2K Games apparently decided to TRIM OFF viewable area from the top and bottom of the 4:3 screen and then enlarge the remaining letterbox to fill your widescreen monitor.

Let's get back to the DRM for a minute though... would you like to know what you have to do if you somehow screw up and lock yourself out of your copy? Would ya? Huh? Well, it's simple...

Bioshock Ships

Like so much else, I read it on bluesnews.

New York, NY - August 21, 2007 - 2K Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), announced today that BioShock is now available in North America for Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Games for Windows®, and will be available in Europe beginning August 24. Developed by 2K Boston and 2K Australia, BioShock is a "genetically enhanced" first-person shooter that lets players do things never before possible in the genre.

Gamers enter the game as a castaway in Rapture, an underwater utopia torn apart by civil war. Caught between powerful forces and hunted down by genetically modified "splicers" and deadly security systems, players have to come to grips with a deadly, mysterious world filled with powerful technology and fascinating characters. No encounter ever plays out the same and no two gamers will play BioShock the same way.
"With the release of BioShock, we are redefining the shooter experience by providing players with the freedom to decide how to proceed and which actions to take," said Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K. "The teams at 2K Boston and 2K Australia have captured the essence of this underwater world and brought it to vivid life in the art design and open-ended storyline. Welcome to Rapture."

In the decaying art deco underwater city of Rapture, players can turn everything they encounter into a weapon, biologically modify their body with plasmids, hack devices and security systems, upgrade weapons, craft new ammo variants, and experiment with different battle techniques.

"The development team has been working on BioShock for years to push the limits in every way possible, so we are excited for gamers to finally experience BioShock as we've always imagined it," said Ken Levine, President and Creative Director of 2K Boston. "We delivered on our promise of bringing gamers a unique and enriching first-person shooter experience that not only challenges their capacity to adapt and survive, but tests their values and commitment to the inhabitants of Rapture."

MMOs Moving Toward "Free to Play" Business Models

Found an interesting article over at Ten Ton Hammer:

Here’s a two-part rhetorical situation for the Ten Ton Hammer readers out there:

1. Suppose somebody offers you a free hamburger. This could be some random schmoe down the street or your next door neighbor. You’ve had one of these burgers before; you know they’re of average quality. It’s a hamburger, but you’re not salivating Homer Simpson-style. Do you take it? Why or why not?

2. Now suppose Burger King decided to give away free hamburgers. Like the previously mentioned hamburger, this is a known quantity. You know what Burger King hamburgers taste like and they are probably no better than the free burgers that were being offered by your neighbor. Do you take this hamburger? Why or why not?

For many of us, if we saw a “Free Hamburgers!” sign outside of a Burger King, there would be a mile-long line outside the door, waiting to get their Whopper on. Are all of these people hungry? Probably not. Do they like Burger King Whoppers? Maybe. But the temptation of a “free” hamburger that once carried a price tag is sorely tempting. Yet when we’re offered free hamburgers by our neighbors and our friends, and we often pass up those opportunities because we know that the burgers are free and will remain free. These free items don’t attract our attention like a Burger King hamburger would, simply because we don’t feel like we’re saving or gaining anything for the exchange.

Atari Circling the Drain... Again

Man, is the name "Atari" cursed or what? Seems like it won't be long now, in my opinion, before it's gone again. From Gamasutra:

Atari Halves Office Space, Gets Second Nasdaq Warning

Atari Halves Office Space, Gets Second Nasdaq Warning Following last month's warning that the publisher was in danger of being delisted from Nasdaq, Atari has received a second notice, as it also discloses that it has amended its lease to halve its New York City office space and reduce yearly rent from $2.4 to $1.2 million.

Atari announced that its first delisting notification from NASDAQ last month, as it had yet to file its Form 10-K fiscal 2007 annual report pending determinations on accounting entries on "certain severance matters."

The company now has received a second notice as it has yet to additionally file its Form 10-Q quarterly report for the period ending June 30, 2007. The publisher has said it will use its previously arranged meeting with Nasdaq to attempt to settle both matters at once.

In the meantime, the company has taken new measures to reduce costs in amending its lease with a new landlord to reduce both the size and cost of its Fifth Avenue offices in NYC by half.

The company has disclosed in a financial filing that its lease will drop from $2.4 to $1.2 million a year, starting December 31st through the end of June, 2011, which will be raised to $1.3 million for five years following, and $1.5 million for five years after that.

The last filed reports for the company showed losses of $71.3 million for the fiscal year ended March 31st, compared to a loss of $69 million in the previous year. In May, the company cut its overall employee count by 20 percent, including a 26 percent reduction in administrative positions.

Intel Ships Long-Awaited Graphics Drivers

From news.com:

Owners of PCs with Intel's 965 chipsets can finally download drivers that will immediately improve the performance of games running on those systems.

The 965 chipsets were supposed to be a dramatic step forward for integrated graphics performance. Most PCs come with graphics technology built right onto the chipset that connects the processor to memory and the rest of a PC. Serious gamers opt for discrete graphics made by Nvidia or AMD's ATI division, but most people save a little money and get the basic graphics.

Intel wanted to make an integrated graphics chipset with more powerful graphics performance that would allow basic PC users to play some of the latest and greatest 3D games when it shipped the 965. But it has been unable to write the drivers needed to enable that performance until now.

Windows XP drivers are available here, but if you're on a Vista PC with Intel's 965 chipset, you'll have to wait a little longer. Intel put together a video here that shows the improved performance of PCs with the new drivers.

Off Topic Friday #6 - I Can't Drive 670,616,629

Ok, I'm probably going to have to explain that headline. It's referencing Sammy Hagar's "I Can't Drive 55" song about the speed limit, but 670,616,629 mph is the speed of light.

This is my oh-so-clever way of introducing this article where a german scientists claims he's gotten a particle to move faster than the speed of light for 3 feet.

Warhammer Q&A - Group Size, Guilds, Item Durability

From over on Warcry -

WarCry: Group sizes seem to be set to 6. For raids, or large encounters, how many groups do you need to take on things like the Bloodthirster, or other epic mobs?

Richard Duffek: We will have a system in place similar to DAoC's Battlegroups, where you basically have a "group of groups" taking on large encounters. Different encounters will be geared to different sized BGs, but that's something we'll be tweaking through beta as more and more testers throw themselves onto the giant pile of corpses surrounding the Bloodthirster's feet.

WarCry: We were told you will be able to customize your guild banner. Does your guild banner do anything, or is it just for looks?

Richard Duffek: While we really can't get into guild features much at this point, I can assure you that the guild banner will do more than just look pretty.

WarCry: In Scenarios, the instanced PvP, what is the highest amount of players allowed in the large instances at a time? What would be the average?

Richard Duffek: We've got Scenarios built for all different sizes - 6-on-6, 12-on-12, 24-on-24, etc. Again, this is something that we're going to be looking at and analyzing a lot through the beta process. We'll be tweaking the numbers for each scenario based on feedback from the testers; if one feels a little cramped, we'll lower the numbers... if one feels a little sparse and it's taking too long to get to the action, we'll raise the numbers, etc.

WarCry: Will Items break or degrade over time?

Richard Duffek: No, but there will be certain things (NOT armor or weapons) that have a limited number of uses or duration of usability available.

WarCry: We were told there are over 40 sets of armor for just one class in the game. Squig armor, City armor, Dungeon armor etc. Do these names have some meaning other than cool names? IE is City armor for taking cities?

Richard Duffek: Forty is a bit high, but there are over twenty sets of armor for each career. The names on the armor sets definitely have a meaning and are indicative of their type, where they are acquired, who they're for, etc.

You Have Failed Me For The Last Time, ATI

This was it. Tonight was the last straw.

I've been vacillating between ATI and Nvidia for my next video card, in the next system I am building. See, all the good, next-gen video cards are PCI-e, not AGP. The motherboard I use currently only has an AGP slot. Thus, I'm going to have to get another motherboard, which means another processor and RAM, then figure in the Video card and I might as well just be building an entire second box.

So I'd been trying to decide, NVidia's formidable 8800 series, or the ATI equivalent? Most of the tests I've seen put them neck and neck. In the past, I've had a lot of driver trouble with Nvidia, but that was back when the 4000 series was cutting edge and the drivers were still called "Detonator." The ATI Radeon 9800 pro 256 I've been using for the last couple years has been rather dependable and has reasonable performance for a card of its age... but the irritants built up over the years.

Of course, so often the "refresh rate" bug would manifest itself (practically every time I updated the ATI drivers), where no matter what refresh rate I set in the utility, 60 Hz is what I got, which creates an especially aggravating flicker on a 21" CRT. That took a registry hack to fix, and then later when I got my 22" LCD, 60 Hz ceased being an issue. Also there was the issue of having to use a special uninstaller/cleaner to rip out every last vestige of the driver every time I wanted to upgrade, but that happened from time to time with Nvidia as well.

But today, the final straw broke the camel's back, and my decision was made.

To resolve another minor issue, I jumped through all the little hoops to update my Catalyst drivers from 6.9 to 7.7. Doing so added a new option (well, new to me anyway) to adjust the image scaling. What this meant was this: thus far, old games (which I play a lot of) which didn't support resolutions for widescreen were being stretched horizontally to fill the entire screen, warping the aspect ratio of the image. I don't like that. I'd rather have anti-letterbox black bars down the side and have the proper ratio on the image. I know this is possible, I've seen it done on other systems, but there was no way to indicate my preference on my current system until now.

I was ecstatic. Too many of my old favorites dating back a dozen years had languished due to the "widescreen ratio barrier." So I gleefully ticked the option to "use centered timings" instead of "scale image to full panel size" under the digital panel properties. Then I pulled up an old game.

And it got stretched.

Confused, I checked and reset the settings, and tried again. No dice.

So I go on a hunt across various support forums trying to figure out if this is another one of those little things that just needs a special tweak (ATI's got a lot of things like that). But I found my hopes cruelly dashed. It was some sort of sick joke. The only people, apparently, who have been able to get this feature to work had very expensive dell LCD panels. For the rest of us schmoes, our choices were get stretched no matter what or buy Nvidia. [References - 1 2 3 4]

The bile backed up in my throat as my mind screamed "Why?! Why taunt users with a nearly-completely-non-functional option?" It was as if AMD/ATI had very specifically come up and dangled a juicy, juicy carrot in front of me... one for which I had longed ever since I had gotten a widescreen monitor... and when my teeth were just about to take their first nibble of the long-awaited treat, I got smacked in the testicles by an electrified reciprocating testicular smacking machine which they had designed specifically for this scenario. Teased and betrayed, seduced and abandoned. That's me.

So screw you, ATI, you bitch! To quote Cleveland Brown, "I may not be perfect, Loretta, but I deserve better than you!" A Geforce 8800 awaits me with tender embrace to comfort me, cut as I am by all your lies and broken promises. And one day you'll see us together, so happy, and you will cry and we will laugh and point and sing and you will hate yourself forever!

King of Fighters MIRA

Got a couple videos here, for King of Fighters MIRA, which I hesitate to call the latest addition to the King of Fighters franchise because it feels completely alien to that line. A major part of the KoF experience was the artistry put into the 2D sprites. For many, it was the 2D fighter that outshone 3D fighters... but in making the transition to the third dimension, a lot of the artistic love seems to have gone out of the characters. They look a lot more generic now, the little details don't come across. In fact, some of them look downright unremarkable. The gameplay itself looks like a bunch of new characters for DOA, really. Speaking of, I did have to chuckle when I noticed that Mai Shiranui's breast physics made the transition largely unscathed.

I guess we'll have to see whether the beloved (by many, if not particularly by me) "SNK Groove" feeling of play makes the transition as well, or if the gameplay feels like just another 3D fighter.

Comic-Con Warhammer Online Q&A

A nice and informative Q&A Session from the guys over at MMO Gamer.

Some bits that caught my eye:

One thing we learned from Dark Age of Camelot was that we had a great PvE game and a great RvR game but they weren’t as co-mingled as we wanted. What we’ve done here is that everything you are doing supports the war in some fashion.

Each zone has a PvP enabled section to it. If you don’t want to go in there, then you’re safe. It’s voluntary. You can go into those areas to fight the enemy or not. That is your choice. The game supports PvE top to bottom or RvR top to bottom, so I could level all the way up just fighting enemies or level up just fighting monsters and doing quests.

We found with Camelot, those are the solid hard core people who really, really love the game. Building that in from the bottom to the top is really the way to go for us. It’s not like we bolted on the PvP afterwards and called it good. It’s been done from day one that way.

Solo players can level all the way up.

We are bringing people in slowly but surely in batches [for the beta]. The next big phase will be fallish when we let in tons and tons of people and it will be a little bit more open.
